Energy audits for the food industry improve efficiency and certainty – Envitecpolis is here to help

The new Energy Efficiency Act introduces new obligations for food industry companies regarding energy consumption, reporting and energy management. If your company’s energy consumption exceeds 2,700 MWh, an energy audit may become a statutory requirement. Envitecpolis helps your organisation meet these obligations, identify opportunities for renewable energy and develop an energy plan that supports your business objectives.

An energy audit is not merely a mandatory report. It is a strategic tool for improving energy efficiency, managing costs and strengthening sustainability communication. It also provides a solid foundation for your company’s long-term energy planning and competitiveness.

How does Envitecpolis support energy audits in the food industry?

Envitecpolis provides food industry companies with a comprehensive expert service covering the entire energy audit process. We begin by assessing whether your company falls within the scope of the new Energy Efficiency Act and continue through to implementation and reporting to the relevant authorities.

Our service includes:

  • Initial assessment and evaluation of statutory obligations

  • Defining audit targets based on production facilities and energy use

  • Site visit and analysis of energy consumption

  • Implementation of site-specific audits and reporting to the Finnish Energy Authority

  • Setting targets for further development and monitoring progress together

We review the overall picture of energy consumption and identify areas where efficiency can be improved. At the same time, we consider opportunities for the company’s own renewable energy production.

What does the Energy Efficiency Act require from food industry companies?

The new Energy Efficiency Act introduces clear requirements for companies whose energy consumption exceeds certain thresholds:

  • Energy audit requirement: If the company’s average annual energy consumption over a three-year period exceeds 2,700 MWh but remains below 23,600 MWh, an energy audit must be carried out every four years.

  • Site-specific audits: These are carried out according to a predefined plan. The number of required audits depends, for example, on the number of sites and how energy consumption is distributed across operations.

  • Reporting: The results of the energy audit are reported to the Finnish Energy Authority and included in the company’s financial statements or annual report, where applicable.

  • Responsible expert: The audit must be overseen by a responsible person approved by the Finnish Energy Authority. This can be a member of the company’s own staff or an external expert.

A company may be exempt from the energy audit obligation if it has, for example:

  • A certified ISO 50001 energy management system

  • ETJ+ together with an energy efficiency agreement

  • ISO 14001 combined with ETJ+

  • An energy performance contract covering more than 90% of total energy consumption

Energy audit – an obligation or an opportunity to build competitive advantage?

Energy consumption often represents a significant share of total operating costs in the food industry. An energy audit offers a practical opportunity to improve efficiency, reduce costs and respond to increasing sustainability expectations from customers and other stakeholders.

When carried out properly, an energy audit does not remain a standalone report. It becomes the starting point for your company’s energy plan and continuous development work. Envitecpolis’ experts ensure that the audit also creates value from a strategic business perspective.
