Farm energy audit – a statutory requirement or a strategic choice?

Under the proposed requirements, businesses with average annual energy consumption between 2,700 MWh and 23,600 MWh would be required to carry out an energy audit at least every four years. Businesses with higher consumption would be subject to requirements relating to certified energy management systems.

​What does the Energy Efficiency Act require from farms?
The new Energy Efficiency Act introduces several obligations for farms with significant energy consumption:

Energy audit requirement: If the farm’s average annual energy consumption over a three-year period exceeds 2,700 MWh but remains below 23,600 MWh, an energy audit must be carried out every four years.

Site-specific audits: These are carried out according to a predefined audit plan. The number of audits depends, for example, on the number of production units and how energy consumption is distributed across the farm.

Reporting: The results of the energy audit are reported to the Finnish Energy Authority and included in the farm’s financial statements or annual report, where applicable.

Responsible expert: The energy audit must be overseen by a responsible person approved by the Finnish Energy Authority.
