Environmental assessment for food companies helps identify the most impactful development areas

Food industry companies are expected to have an increasingly detailed understanding of the environmental impacts of their operations. We provide reliable, calculated data on carbon footprints, biodiversity and water footprints across the entire value chain, from primary production to the finished product.

How we can help: comprehensive environmental assessment across the entire value chain

Envitecpolis offers food companies a wide range of environmental assessment services to support sustainability targets and reporting:

  • Primary production assessment: Farm-specific carbon footprint calculations for products such as milk, meat or grain. Where the number of farms is sufficient, we can also calculate an average carbon footprint for the entire primary production base.

  • Processing assessment: Greenhouse gas emissions modelling at factory, production line or individual product level.

  • Value chain assessment: Combines primary production and processing assessments to provide a comprehensive view of environmental impacts across the production chain. The results can also support product labelling and consumer communication.

Calculations are carried out in accordance with the GHG Protocol and IPCC methodologies. We also take into account the EU Product Environmental Footprint guidance and the ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards. For primary production, data collection, calculation, analysis and reporting are managed through the EnvitecVisio cloud-based platform.

Biodiversity and water footprint as part of environmental responsibility

Environmental assessment extends beyond greenhouse gas emissions. Envitecpolis also provides company-specific assessments of biodiversity and water use:

  • Biodiversity assessment: Based on the raw materials used by the company and their location-specific environmental impacts, or on farm-specific biodiversity assessments.

  • Water footprint: Assesses the sustainability of water use, opportunities to reduce consumption and possibilities for water reuse across different stages of food production. The assessment uses the AWARE methodology. AWARE, or Available WAter REmaining, measures water scarcity at catchment level by considering the amount of water available relative to the global average after the needs of people and ecosystems have been met.
